A few weeks ago I opened a log I had not looked at in months. I was expecting a long list. It was empty.
The habit was simple. Every issue of this newsletter was supposed to get pulled apart after it went out and put back in front of the people who missed it the first time. I set it up once, watched it work, and moved on to the next thing, the way you do with anything you trust.
I did not know it had stopped, because it had never started. Zero runs since the day I built it. Not "mostly working with a few gaps." Zero. And it kept not happening for months, because nothing about it looked broken. No error, no red flag, nothing on a dashboard telling me to go look.
That is the actual failure mode I keep finding, in my own operation and in every business I look at closely. It is never the tool breaking. Tools mostly work fine on their own. It is the tool sitting there, fully capable, next to a human step that never runs, month after month, with nothing anywhere to tell you.
Here is where it usually hides:
The report that gets generated and never opened.
The lead list that gets built and never worked.
The automation that gets tested once, works, and never gets turned into a real habit anyone owns.
The workflow that gets designed in a meeting and never gets a name attached to who runs it every week.
None of these throw an error. They show up as a slow leak on a bill you are already paying, and you only find them when you go looking, the way I found mine.
So here is the one move worth making this week. Pick one thing you built, automated, or delegated in the last six months. Go check whether it ran. Not whether it could run. Whether it did. If the answer surprises you, you found your version of my newsletter habit.
I build systems for a living. I still let one sit idle for months without noticing. The system was fine the whole time. I was the missing step.
